about

The Long Night

There is a Norfolk folklore tale of The Binham Fiddler… where one day a wandering minstrel (aren’t they always?) was wandering and wandered into the village of Binham, only to see a group of people looking down a hole in the ground. There was much contemplating on where it would lead to and the path it took. the minstrel (let’s call him “Foolish’) offered to go down the hole and play his violin so that those above ground could follow his progress and track the path he and the hole would take. So down the hole he went and soon the playing stopped and he was never seen again…. Except, it is said, on dark moonless nights the villagers would hear the soft plaintive sound of a mournful violin on the wind.

This song is inspired by that tale
